Agnes Bernek

Agnes Bernek is a senior research fellow at the Geopolitical Research Group of Eurasia Center at the John von Neumann University, she is the research director of the Geopolitical Research Group. She earned her degree in geography at Eötvös Loránd University (Budapest). She earned her Ph.D. in geography. Her academic research has been in the area of the spatial structure of the world economy and world politics. Since 2009 she has been dealing exclusively with geopolitics, and with three main research orientations within: the relations between great power geopolitical and geo-economic strategies, the rethinking of classic geopolitical concepts for the 21st century, and the geopolitical situation of Central and Eastern Europe in the 21st century. Her research results more than they appeared in 100 scientific journals and book chapters. Her book written about the geopolitical situation of Central and Eastern Europe in the 21st century was published by the Akadémiai Publishing Company in 1998 in Hungarian. This book in an adapted and enlarged form was published in English by the Peter Lang Academic Publishing Company in 2021 with the title “„Geopolitics of Central and Eastern Europe in the 21st Century – From the Buffer Zone to the Gateway Zone”.  

Her research has always been closely related to her work as an educator. From 1989 to 2004 she taught at Eötvös Loránd University Department of Regional Geography, and then at King Sigismund University until 2018. She is currently lecturer at the University of Public Service (Budapest) and the Budapest Business School as well as the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. She also teaches the course “Geo-economic strategies of the 21st century” in the geopolitics doctoral program at the University of Pécs Doctoral School of Earth Sciences.

Her research in geopolitics has been utilized in her work as a business consultant. Since 2017 she has been an expert advisor to the Hungarian Export Promotion Agency, where she writes expert reports and leads lectures and training sessions for corporate leaders and foreign economic attachés. Through her consulting work she consistently analyzes the geopolitical background of the latest world economic processes.
