Reality and Potentiality: Hungary-China Cooperation within the Belt and Road Initiative Context

This volume of studies was prepared in collaboration between the Eurasia Center of John von Neumann University and the Belt and Road Research Institute of Xiamen University on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of Hungarian-Chinese diplomatic relations.

The cooperation between the Hungarian and Chinese universities started in 2023, and this year we are already witnessing its first fruit with the publication of this book. Besides strengthening cooperation, it also commemorates the diplomatic relations between the two countries.

In May 2024, Chinese President Xi Jinping made an official visit to Hungary, followed by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s trip to China in June. These visits marked a duly celebration of Hungarian-Chinese diplomatic relations, which have now entered the golden era.

But how did we reach this golden age, and what does a relationship in a golden era look like? This is what we present in this volume, featuring studies based on joint research by renowned professors from Xiamen University and John von Neumann University, along with other distinguished experts. The studies cover the five core pillars of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), namely Political Relations, Infrastructural Connectivity, Trade Relations, Financial Integrity, and Cultural Connectivity.

Esteemed readers will gain insight into the distant past of Hungarian-Chinese relations, the political connections of the past 75 years, and the evolving cooperation between Hungary and China under the framework of the BRI. We also introduce the various routes connecting the two countries and highlight Hungary’s role in linking Europe and China. Our examination includes Hungarian-Chinese trade relations and their potential opportunities, as well as the possibilities offered by the digital economy. There is also great potential in financial cooperation between Hungary and China, which we showcase from both perspectives. Finally, you will read about cultural relations, with the central thesis being the importance of mutual understanding between our nations.

The goal of this volume, produced by the Eurasia Center of John von Neumann University and the Belt and Road Research Institute of Xiamen University, is to deepen the understanding between the two sides and thus further enhance the political, trade, economic, and cultural relations between Hungary and China. We hope that after this 75th anniversary, we will look back on at least 75 more years of similar success.

We wish you an enjoyable read and much success in the further development of Hungarian-Chinese relations.
